10 top tips to help you become successful in life
Updated: Apr 25, 2019
At Aspire 2 Me, we aim to raise aspirations through the essence of sport & wellbeing. We do this through delivering aspirational workshops to young people and businesses throughout the UK.
Below we have put together our top 10 tips on how you can become successful in life, whether that's working towards a promotion, achieving the result you need in school or just simply looking to improve your lifestyle.
1. Don’t be afraid of failure
This may seem like a strange concept, especially when it comes down to getting that result you need or pushing for that job you really want but starting off in the wrong mindset will almost certainly reduce your chances of succeeding.
If you are not afraid of failing, you are less likely to put unnecessary pressure on yourself and this then allows you to free your mind up to what really matters. And if you do fail, that’s OK! Try again, learn from your mistakes and build your confidence.
Many famous, successful people have failed before they have succeeded. Take Walt Disney for example, he was fired from the Kansas City Star because his editor felt that he lacked imagination. That didn’t stop him from trying again, until he finally become one of the greatest animators of our time.
2. Get rid of any distractions
We all love to procrastinate, especially when there is something big looming and you’re struggling to focus. When you start feeling this way, right a list of all the things that distract you – remove them from your reach and give yourself a reward for not succumbing to temptation each time you successfully finish a task.
Turn off all your electrical items, remove yourself from distracting people and find yourself a nice place to relax and focus on the task at hand. This could be writing a report, finishing homework, getting in that workout or finishing the book you’ve been wanting to read. No matter how big or small the goal, following this simple rule will help!
3. Believe you can succeed, and it will happen
Never doubt your ability to be able to do something. If you want it, believe it. Success comes from having the right mental attitude, just like we talked about when not being afraid of failure.
There will always be someone who doubts you and will try and stop you from doing what you dream of. Never let them win. Strive for your goal and help anyone else to achieve theirs too.
Keep believing, because we believe in you!
Yes, I know planning can be boring, but it really is essential to reaching your goal.
Get yourself a planner!
Plan your week out so you know what you’re doing, when you’re doing it and how you will do it. If you have an assignment that needs to be handed in on Friday, plan it so that you need to complete it by Wednesday. This then takes a lot of the stress off your shoulders and gives you the time to make any amends should you need to.
The point is, following a set plan will guarantee you reach your goal and produce the high-quality work that is needed for you to succeed. Just ‘winging’ it may work for some occasions, but it will never give you the right results to push you forward and you will end up causing more stress for yourself.
5. Balance is key
Of course, you cannot be successful in life if you don’t put in the time and effort. That being said, it is really important not to over work yourself, else you’ll burn out and not benefit from all the work you have put in.
It’s hard not to put your all into something, especially if you’re trying to impress your boss, but you need to remember that you are human, and you can only do so much. Work hard throughout the day, make sure to be on-time, do that little bit extra to help a colleague but don’t over power yourself with work. If there is something you don’t have time to do, say, and ask someone else to help you.
On the other hand, others may feel like their social life is more important and don’t concentrate enough at work. Yes, we need to have a social life else we’d go mad, but don’t overdo it at the expense of your career. You still need that money to be able to go out with friends!
6. What is it that you want?
Your goals need to be determined from the outset. Make a list of everything you’d like to achieve and put them in order from low to high priority. Work on your highest priority goal first, working through each of the tips we have already talked about and make sure to plan. Once you have your routine, it will be much easier to achieve your goal.
When you have completed your highest priority, work through the rest of your list. There will always be new opportunities popping up throughout your life, that you had not considered before. Keep your list open to these new possibilities but only work on one at a time, else your focus will be lost.
7. Think BIG
Is your goal to develop your own business? Make your goals BIG. Of course, you need to be realistic and your initial turnaround won’t be as high as you’d like, but persistence is key. Write down where you want you want to be in 1, 5 then 10 years’ time, then aim your goals to meet those expectations.
Don’t forget, the bigger the goal, the longer it will take to achieve so don’t worry if you don’t see results straight away.
The greatest minds and most successful people in the world didn’t get where they are overnight. Take Lord Alan Sugar for example; a very well-known, successful British entrepreneur who made his first million at the age of 33. He started from nothing at the age of 21, setting up his company Amstrad in 1968. Now he is the 95th richest person in the UK (as of 2016) with a whopping net worth of £1.15billion.
Even if your goal is not to create your own business, this tip is important. The best way to do it is, set a BIG goal and then decide on the smaller goals that will make up the BIG one. This way, you will feel like you’ve achieved more, in smaller steps but the main target is still being accomplished.
8. Don’t rely on other people
You will always need help and guidance to achieve what you want but don’t rely on anyone to do it for you. For example, if you want to get fit and go to the gym but feel you need a gym buddy, this can be great for a while until that gym buddy can no longer be bothered, which in turn makes you unmotivated and altogether stop going.
Now, I’m not saying having a gym buddy is a bad idea, in fact it can be helpful. Just make sure you’re going with someone you know is motivated and will push you to be also. But don’t let yourself rely on them, just in case they decide to quit. This means go on your own sometimes. It may not be nice at first, but your confidence will grow, and you’ll never know any different.
The same goes for homework, assignments and reports. You have been tasked to do it, so do it. People can help you, but you can’t rely on them to complete it for you, else you would never learn what you need to do.
9. Act on it
Be pro-active. You will never be successful unless you are ready to get up and search for opportunities. Things don’t just appear, you need to seek them out in order to reach your goal.
This links back to believe you can succeed, and it will happen. If you have an idea of something you’d like to do but ‘society’ says its wrong, don’t let that stop you. Just because no one else has done it, doesn’t mean you can’t. Stand out from the crowd, act on your goal and you never know, you could change the world.
Just think about William Shakespeare. When we think about influential plays from over the years, you think of William Shakespeare. He re-invented the theatre scene and accomplished huge success from acting on his dreams.
10. Find your passion
Last but not least, find your passion in life. If you can find what you love, then do it! There is no better reward than doing a job that you are passion about because it doesn’t feel like your working. Therefore, so many people open their own businesses because they can work hard on something that they want to see succeed.
Even if you don’t want to open your own business but find a job that you love, this makes more sense than spending most of your life working for something you hate. You’ll never truly flourish if you stick doing something you’re not happy with.
If you love animals, work with animals. If you love cars, work with cars. If you love teaching, become a teacher. There are so many options out there in this day and age; we sometimes don’t realise how lucky we are!
True success is being happy. Do what makes you happy and the rest will fall into place.
Wrapping it up
As you can see, there is a lot of information here and a lot of it is very similar. The best advice we can give is to find your passion, set your goals, plan, get rid of distractions, be pro-active and have fun!
The most important thing is that you enjoy reaching your goal, however hard the journey may be. No matter where you are in life, there is always time to pursue success. It’s now up to you to take the first step.
